Aldi sees record festive sales

Sales at supermarket chain Aldi’s UK and Ireland business grew by over 26 per cent during December 2022 and reached £1.4 billion, resulting in record sales.

The supermarket attributed the growth to the football world cup and an increased number of people spending the festive season together after the Covid pandemic.

The world cup boosted sales of snacks such as crisps and nuts, which were up over 40 per cent. Sales of desserts roes by 30 per cent and consumers purchased 50 per cent more fresh cheese.

Aldi said customers bought more than 48 million mince pies, 38 million pigs-in-blankets and more than 1,700 tonnes of sprouts in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Commenting on the news Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This year, Christmas was all about family and football as people came together to celebrate in a way we’ve not enjoyed for years.”

He added: “I’m immensely proud of our amazing colleagues who once again went above and beyond to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers.”
